Description

Old And New

Records show that when the Royal Arsenal Riverside was a working Arsenal it was so big it had its own railway track to assist with moving both personnel and goods around the site.

The early 'railway' was commenced in 1824 as more of a tramway over which wooden trucks were pushed, often by convicts or pulled by horses. It was completed in 1854.

In 1873 after the invention of Steam Engines the War Department installed a proper railway system providing a link between the offices and workshops, and between production and storage.

Today there are very little signs of this track from years past, but you will find the site benefits from enviable commuter links with Woolwich DLR an 5 minute walk away meaning Canary Wharf is a journey of 19 minutes away. Alternatively the Thames Clipper pontoon is on site with a boat ride too or from a day's work, hard to beat!

These transport options will be further enhanced when Crossrail is complete with the station within the Royal Arsenal walls.

Future Plans for the Royal Arsenal

Huge investment is being made on the Royal Arsenal development, including onsite restaurants & wine bars, new retail space, a new hotel, Elizabeth Line Crossrail Station opening 2018 and the newly announced Dash Arts Cultural Centre, a theatre and arts arena coming 2019.

Regeneration of Woolwich

A new Civic Centre on Wellington Street provides a new library, post office and cafe/bar. Behind the Centre a brand-new Tesco superstore has recently opened alongside a town centre car park and 1000 new homes. The Tesco store is an eco-store powered by solar panels and wind turbines, and has a farmers’ market selling local produce, and two children's playgrounds.

At the western end of Powis Street, there is a designated development area known as the Woolwich Triangle - construction will soon commence for a new shopping centre with a major retailer taking centre stage. The Triangle development will include a leisure space, cafes and restaurants; the whole area covers an area of 300,000 sq. ft. and will revitalise the whole western end of the town centre as a car-free zone. Woolwich gets its own 'West End'!

Between the A206, Spray Street and Beresford Road a huge area will be torn down and completely re-developed as part of the Spray Street Development with new residential plots, open spaces, courtyards, shops and restaurants. The planning application has been submitted and development is due to start sometime in 2018.

The High Street will also benefit from the restoration of the existing Grade II listed buildings to give extra character and focus. Once refurbished these historic buildings will accommodate new retail brands and major high street names, the whole area will become more vibrant during the day and in to the evening with new coffee bars and restaurants.

£6.6million was recently spent on the redesign of General Gordon Square and Beresford Square near to the Woolwich Arsenal DLR and Train stations. This is now complete, and features include new landscape planting, seating areas, a large digital media display for sporting and public events, and a new water feature.

Royal Arsenal will also have a major Crossrail Station onsite. Crossrail is a major engineering project to provide new railway connections under central London. Trains will run from Maidenhead and Heathrow in the west to Shenfield and Abbey Wood. 10-coach trains are due to run at high frequencies of up to 24 trains per hour during peak hours. Work officially began on 15 May 2009 and is projected to be complete in 2018. See more at Crossrail.co.uk
